Nicholas Hanley | Former Head of Unit for International Relations and Enlargement, European Commission, Directorate General for Environment

Having completed post-graduate research in botany at the University of Oxford, Nicholas Hanley worked for the planning departments of two district councils before joining the UK Government’s Countryside Commission in 1985. In 1988, he was appointed to the secretariat of the European Parliament Committee for Regional Policy. He began work for EC DG Environment in 1989, holding a variety of positions — including assistant to the director-general and head of the Task Force Environment Action Programme and Integration — before becoming head of unit for Policy Coordination (1998), Nature and Biodiversity (2001), Communication and Governance (2006) and International Relations and Enlargement (2009). He retired in July 2016.
