Dejan Komatina holds a PhD in civil engineering, with a focus on environmental river engineering, and has over 27 years of national and international experience in integrated water resources management and the sustainable development of river basins in the fields of science, education, engineering and management. He began his career as a teacher and scientist at the universities of Belgrade, Delft, Hamburg and Banja Luka, and was vice-dean of educational affairs at the University of Belgrade. He subsequently became the first chief executive officer of the International Sava River Basin Commission, a post he held for over 11 years. During his time in this post he gained experience in the management of an international organisation, including coordinating the preparation and implementation of strategies, policies, work plans, work programmes and projects; fundraising; educational activities, capacity building, public participation and stakeholder involvement; and networking and partnership building. He joined the REC in April 2017, bringing with him a variety of important professional skills, including an ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, a problem-solving attitude, and pragmatism.
