The first eco-magazine in Serbia "EKOlist", marked the 10th anniversary of successful work and on the same occasion nine awards were given to individuals and organizations active in the field of environment in the past year.
Regional Environmental Center (REC), Office in Serbia, was awarded for education of journalists and support to civil society organizations in 2017. This represents recognition of REC’s activities, implemented primarily through the CSOnnect program, within which 66 organizations were supported (in a total of 11 consortia) by institutional grants, and that as an important component includes empowerment and cooperation with the media, journalists and media editors in Serbia.
By implementing this program, the REC works on strengthening capacities of civil society organizations and helps them in their efforts to contribute to the negotiation process and to engage in dialogue with the institutions of the Republic of Serbia and the European Union on this issue. Moreover, through the CSOnnect program REC organizes workshops and specific trainings for journalists and editors of traditional and new media, but also awards media works and supports them in further striving towards prioritizing and maintaining the topic of environmental issues in public.
Dejan Maksimovic, representative of one of the partner organizations within the CSOnnect program, Ecological Center "Staniste", received the award for civic courage in environmental protection. While receiving the award, Mr. Maksimovic expressed his gratitude to all those who recognized the importance of their work, and in particular the Regional Environmental Center and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, that enabled his and partner organizations to further research financing the environment in Serbia in 2017.
